Iceland: The land of fire and ice!

We landed somewhere outside Reykjavic, the capital of Iceland late at night. When we got out of the airport we were gratly shocked! We had left from Greece with the usual temperature, which was around 25 Celsius degrees. In Iceland that very first night the temperature was about -20 Celsius degrees! We immediately got changed into our winter clothes and left straight away for our camping. And yes, unfortunately I said a camping, a camping totally different from what we have here in Greece. It was an empty icy field. We parked our car, we put on our tents quickly without feeling our limbs and we tried to sleep even for a while. No one slept.

Next morning, Marios (@marios_giannakou), Natassa (@natassa_karabournioti), Timos (@timkour), and I, we all decided to forget the camping for the next few days and stay somewhere warmer. We started our adventure right away, our target was to do the tour of Iceland, the famous Ring Road in five days. We saw and lived things such as vast and icy areas with glaciers, volcanoes, huge waterfalls and rivers, things which can only see in films. We enjoyed the sunset in front of some icebergs, we visited the crushed American plane and drove through a blizzard in the North part of the island, which was the most infertile. During our trip we met a lot of natives, real descendants of the Vikings. We also met the incredible Maria (@maria_lagou82) who lives alone in Iceland and works as a mountain guide in the glaciers. Maria was kind enough to have us over in her spacious and warm garage for one night, next to her climbing equipment. It was like a dream! The most unexpected and exciting meeting was the one with the guys of Altervan (@altervan_roadtrips). We met them accidentally in a glacier and rejoined them a few days later in Reykjavic, we ended as friends.

Another problem we had through the whole trip was the food. The place was so barren that the only place we could eat were the gas stations N1 which existed every few hundreds of kilometers. Every time we found something better than N1’s hot dogs we were thrilled. It was a fantastic journey and a unique experience. You should definitely visit Iceland at the earliest opportunity. Finally, we should thank Allianz Direct Greece for their help. Without their support the trip couldn’t have been fulfilled.
